Called the "first aid kit in a bottle," Tea Tree Oil is known to grow in only one place in the world yet has been used to treat a myriad of health conditions in both animals and humans alike. Tee Tree Oil grows naturally only in Australia's Northeast region known as New South Wales. It was discovered in 1770, although studies were not done on the tree's oils until 1923 when the full properties of the oil were realized by scientists and researchers. This research has shown that Tea Tree Oil possesses 48 organic compounds containing both antiseptic and fungicidal properties. BENEFITS: Tea Tree Oil has truly earned its nickname as a first aid kit in a bottle. For example, it can clean and heal wounds and skin ailments. When mixed in soaps, shampoos, lotions and perfume, the oil gives skin a youthful glow and helps oxygenate skin cells and repairs damaged skin caused by sun, acne, dry skin, fungus and other skin disorders. Many people with sensitive skin have said soap with Tea Tree Oil is effective yet mild and non-irritating. As a shampoo, dandruff can be controlled as can lice and seborrhea. And as a cream containing at least 5% Tea Tree Oil, it offers therapeutic properties to heal insect bites, athlete's foot and rashes. While Tea Tree Oil has proven very popular in Europe and Australia, it has only recently caught on in the US, and is now approved for use in cosmetics. The oil is said to offer sore and injured muscles and joints relief when either rubbed directly on the aching area or diluted in water as a bath soak. Similarly, it is also said to help lessen the pain associated with arthritis and sprains. To relieve cold symptoms such as head and nasal congestion, Tea Tree Oil can be added to a vaporizer with steaming water or dropped directly in the nostril using one or two single drops. For sore throat pain, placing a few drops in water and gargling may ease discomfort. Another common use of Tea Tree Oil is for dental hygiene. Used in a toothpaste and/or mouthwash, it may prove to be effective for bad breath, mouth ulcers, cold sores, plaque control, pyorrhea, and bleeding gums by inhibiting bacteria. Tea Tree Oil has also been shown to be effective on baby diaper rash when combined with a lotion. Moreover, diluting 20 drops of the oil with water makes a solution in which diapers can be cleaned. Or if a baby suffers from "cradle cap," mixing Tea Tree Oil with olive oil and rubbing it onto the scalp (left on for five minutes and then rinsed off) it is also said to be beneficial. ANIMAL CARE: If you own a dog, cat or horse, Tea Tree Oil has also been shown to be effective in healing rashes, cuts and itches and repelling insects such as horse flies and fleas. Regularly bathing your animal with the oil may be a preventative measure in avoiding insect infestation. For cuts it is recommended that you dilute the oil before using on your pet. For fleas, adding a few drops to your regular pet shampoo is suggested. Bathing the animal once or twice weekly should result in improvement. Whenever possible, the shampoo should be left on for three to five minutes before rinsing. This is an alternative to the chemical "dips" experienced by many pets in veterinary offices. However, it is important to remember that with pets, avoid the oil coming into contact with the eyes. If the particular problem persists, advice from a professional medical specialist is advisable.
